The Dhaka divisional commissioner on Thursday rejected the appeal of suspended Gazipur City Corporation mayor Zahangir Alam challenging the cancellation of his nomination papers for the mayoral post in GCC election.
The decision was announced by the Dhaka divisional commissioner Md Sabirul Islam after holding a hearing on the appeal at the office of the divisional commissioner in the afternoon.
Zahangir Alam along with his two lawyers were present during the hearing.
Vedorganj upazila election officer and representative of the returning officer of GCC election, Manzur Hossain Khan, confirmed the news.
On April 30, the returning officer for Gazipur mayoral polls cancelled his nomination paper over loan default.
‘Zahangir Alam is a defaulter; so the commission is cancelling his candidacy. His mother and independent candidate Zayeda Khatun is cleared to run for office,’ returning officer Faridul Islam had said on the day.
Zahangir Alam sought nomination from the ruling Awami League but failed to get the party ticket. He later submitted nomination paper to vie in the election as an independent candidate.
The ruling party nominated Gazipur city AL president Azmat Ullah Khan as their mayoral candidate.
