Professor Maksud Kamal takes charge as Dhaka University VC

Professor ASM Maksud Kamal officially joined office on Saturday as the 29th vice-chancellor of Dhaka University.

He took charge from outgoing VC Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman in the morning at vice-chancellor’s office.

The newly appointed VC Professor ASM Maksud Kamal expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to president and chancellor of the university, Mohammed Sahabuddin, and prime minister Sheikh Hasina for appointing him as the university VC.

He said, ‘Dhaka University is a symbol of hope and aspiration of the country. Behind all the achievements of this country, there is unique contribution of this university.’

Expressing his confidence to take Dhaka University to a unique height on the world map, the VC said, ‘Through quality education, basic research, creative and innovative work, this university will work for the welfare of students, the country and the nation.’

The VC called upon all concerned to cooperate fully in upholding the tradition, image, reputation and dignity of the university by maintaining a fair environment for education.

After that, he paid a humble tribute to the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi-32 and laid a wreath on his portrait.

Earlier, on October 15, Professor Kamal was temporarily appointed as the vice-chancellor of the university with effect from November 4.

Professor Maksud began his career as a lecturer at the geology department of Dhaka University in March 2000 and was made a professor in the same department in 2010.

Before joining the university, he had served as a scientific officer at the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation for nearly six years.

He is a recognised expert in the fields of earthquake and tsunami studies, as well as urban disaster management.

He served as the president of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association for four terms and three times as its general secretary.

Besides, he held positions of president and secretary general for the Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association Federation for three terms.
