Wife and mother of Nahid Hasan, who was killed during the students-traders clash in New Market area yesterday, broke down in tears at Dhaka Medical College (DMC) morgue today. Nahid’s father was speechless.

Remembering her 18-year-old husband, Dolly was wailing in the morgue. Other family members had no words to console her.

Dolly said, “I was a little unwell, and I asked Nahid not to go to work. But he didn’t listen. He said that work remained suspended for a long time during the pandemic. He told me he couldn’t skip work during the month of Ramadan.”

“After getting phone calls from his boss, Nahid left the house around 10 am. He worked for a courier service. Since he left, I had no conversations with him. Later, I heard that he was injured in the clash,” she added.

Dolly said, “I want justice. I want justice from the government. Will the government compensate us?”

Nahid’s mother Nargis Begum said, “He was the best son. He had never misbehaved with anyone. He was in good health. But now my son is a corpse. How can I accept this?”

Nahid’s father said, “I have three sons. Nahid is the eldest. Yesterday, I left for work at 7 am. Later, I heard that Nahid had gone to work after getting a phone call from his boss. He was then injured in a clash in the New Market area. I don’t know who killed my son.”

“I won’t get my son back. Allah will be the judge. I hope the Prime Minister will do the rest,” he added.

Nahid’s aunt Dalia said that her nephew and Dolly got married eight months ago. All the family members lived in the same house in Dhaka’s Kamrangirchar. Nahid lived on the third floor with his wife while his parents live on the second floor.

“Nahid and his father were the earners of the family. But Nahid used to take care of everything,” the aunt said.

After suffering injuries during the students-traders clashes yesterday, Nahid died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 9:35pm.
