Dengue kills six more, hospitalises 559 others in Bangladesh

At least six more dengue patients died in the past 24 hours till Saturday morning across Bangladesh, taking the official death toll to 226 since January.

Of the fresh deceased, four died in Dhaka city, one each in Chattogram and Barishal districts, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services.

A total of 559 dengue patients were admitted to different health facilities across the country in the past 24 hours ending 8:00am on Saturday, of which 320 were reported in Dhaka city and 239 in other places outside the capital city.

With the latest figure, a total of 52,161 patients with dengue were admitted to hospitals this year while many took treatment at their homes.

Currently, 2,724 patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country and 1,552 were admitted to 53 Dhaka hospitals with the mosquito-borne viral disease.

The yearly death toll due to dengue hits all-time high this year that has about one and a half months to go.

The government started keeping records of dengue deaths and patients since 2000.

A total of 33,751 patients or 64.71 per cent of this year’s total hospitalised patients were reported in Dhaka city, according to the DGHS release.

A total of 85 patients died of dengue and 14,137 patients were hospitalised in 19 days of November, showing a rising trend in dengue patients and fatalities.

Of this year’s total dengue deaths, 135 died in Dhaka city, one each in Narsingdi and Madaripur districts, 55 in Chattogram division, 11 in Khulna, 10 in Barishal, six in Mymensingh and six in Rajshahi divisions, the press release said.
