Dengue kills seven more people, infects 983 others in Bangladesh

At least seven more people died of dengue across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours till Tuesday morning, taking the total official death toll to 148 since January.

Of the fresh deaths in the past 24 hours ending 8:00am on Tuesday, five died in Dhaka city and one in Chattogram and another in Barishal, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services.

At least 983 dengue patients were hospitalised in the past 24 hours, of which, 532 were reported in Dhaka city and 451 in other places outside the capital city.

The mosquito-borne viral disease forced 39,007 people to admit to health facilities across the country, of which, 21,932 were reported in October, showing an unbridled rise in dengue infections.

Except October, the number of hospitalised dengue patients was 9,911 in September followed by 3,571 in August, 1,571 in July, 737 in June, 163 in May, 23 in April, 20 each in February and March, and 126 in January, according to the official data.

Of the deceased from dengue, 89 died in Dhaka city, one in Narsingdi, one in Madaripur, 39 in Chattogram, six in Barishal, six in Khulna, four in Mymensingh and two in Rajshahi, said the DGHS press release.

Month-wise, one died in June, nine in July, 11 in August, 34 in September, 86 in October and seven in the first day of November.

A total of 26,548 patients or 68.06 per cent of this year’s total hospitalisation were reported in Dhaka city.

A total of 3598 dengue patients are currently undergoing treatment across the country, of which, 2322 are in 53 private and government health facilities in Dhaka city.
