AL finalises nominations for Rangpur, Rajshahi divisions

The ruling Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday said that the party had finalised nominations for 69 constituencies in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions for contesting in the next general election, scheduled to be held on January 7, with ‘Boat’ symbol.

He told reporters at a briefing after the AL’s Parliamentary Nomination Board meeting at the partry’s Dhaka district unit office in the capital’s Tejgaon area with AL president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

‘We have finalised [nomination for] 33 seats in Rangpur and 36 seats in Rajshahi. We will reveal the names together officially after finalising the total nomination lists. The meeting is adjourned till 10:00am tomorrow,’ said Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister.

He, however, said that many incumbent lawmakers were dropped.

He, however, could not recall the number immediately.

‘We are priortising popularity in selecting candidates. We will disclose the names of the party candidates by November 25,’ he said.

Replying to a question about the party’s rebel candidates, he said, ‘We have to see who the rebels are. Then, we will take decision.’

He said that the festivity of the election was going on across the country.

‘It is difficult to say who will create alliance with whom,’ he added.

AL advisory council member and coordinator of the AL-led alliance Amir Hossain Amu, advisory council member Tofail Ahmed, presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, AL central working committee member Abul Hasnat Abdullah and the party’s office secretary Biplab Barua, among others, were present in the meeting.
